The story board of my life

When making our latest Halloween film, The Hitchhiker, I decided on a few things early on. First, we were going to have a well thought out story. Second, we were going to have a complete screenplay. Finally, we were going to storyboard everything before we started shooting.

Here are some interesting examples of just how well this extra work actually payed off. The following are pieces of the screenplay, and the storyboards with their respective filmed counter parts. The shots with the Deputy were shot by one of the actors and not by myself as I was actually playing the deputy and could not man the camera. With good storyboards, even a novice cameraman gets a good shot.

EXT. GAS STATION – DAY
The sun is rippling off the pavement of the old gas station.
From a distance we see an old beat-up car pull up to the station.

The three tattered figures pull themselves out into the open for a break. The DRIVER fumbles with some bills (several hundreds are seen) he heads into the station.

The other two slouch against the car, waiting.

Two Working Girls leaning next to the station. Clive stops next to one and lowers his glasses to take a look.

EXT. ACROSS STREET - DAY
The Deputy, full of himself and biting back at the sun, shifts the toothpick in his lips with targeted curiosity toward the men.

On the Deputy’s radio: We hear about a bank heist, pulled off by three men.

The Driver returns with packs of beer. They load them into the back seat. One of the guys says something to the Driver. They’re out of earshot but the Driver spins on him and yells; the third guy laughs as he gets into the car. They all get in.

The car drives past the Deputy. For the first time we see his badge as he turns his body to watch the leaving car. He clenches his teeth around the toothpick and then spits it out.
